The two default picks in the segment aren’t equally reliable. Five model years of data say the gap is real — and it comes down to one index, not the one you’d expect.
Ask around for a dependable mid-size SUV and you tend to get the same two names in the same breath: the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. The received wisdom is that they’re interchangeable — both safe, both sensible, you can’t go wrong. The reliability data says otherwise. The gap between them is real, and it shows up in year after year of failure records. But the interesting part is where the gap comes from. It isn’t that one of these SUVs breaks worse than the other. It’s that one of them breaks far less often.
Two things shape this comparison, so we’ll keep them separate the whole way through: the two indices that make up a reliability score, and the powertrain. For our purposes a RAV4 is not one vehicle — the hybrid and the gasoline version post very different numbers, and so does the CR-V. Lumping them together is how you arrive at a mushy “they’re both fine.” Splitting them is how you see what’s actually happening. Everything below covers the 2021 through 2025 model years, both powertrains, pulled from the same dataset that powers the dashboard.

Start with the number that barely moves: severity. Across all five model years and both powertrains, every one of the twenty readings lands between 0.83 and 1.15 — a tight band around the 1.00 baseline. When either of these SUVs breaks, it costs about the same. On this axis they genuinely are interchangeable, and in several years the CR-V is the marginally milder of the two.
Now the number that does move: frequency. In hybrid form the RAV4 runs between 0.06 and 0.30 while the CR-V runs from 0.43 all the way to 1.15. In gasoline form the spread is wider still and the lead changes hands. The RAV4 doesn’t fail less severely than the CR-V — it fails less often. That single index is the entire coin flip, and it isn’t a coin flip.
The strip along the bottom is worth dwelling on. In hybrid form the RAV4 wins all five years, most of them by a wide margin. In gasoline form the CR-V actually takes 2021 — and it isn’t close, 0.45 against the RAV4’s 0.71. That is the one year the old “can’t go wrong with either” line is not just defensible but backwards from what you’d expect.
It is worth showing the tie rather than just asserting it, because it’s the fact most reliability comparisons quietly skip.
This matters for how you weigh the verdict. If your worry is the catastrophic repair — the transmission, the hybrid battery, the bill that ends the car — these two are close to equivalent, and the ranking gap overstates the difference. If your worry is the cumulative nuisance of shop visits, the gap is exactly as large as it looks.
The RAV4 Hybrid is the standout of all four configurations, and it isn’t especially close. It ranks #4 of 72 in 2024 on a frequency of 0.06 — near the floor of the entire dataset — and #5 of 66 in 2025. Its lifetime standing is #2 of 88 across ten model years, which puts it one rung from the top of the whole segment. Every hybrid RAV4 year in this window earns the dashboard’s “Well above average” badge.
The CR-V Hybrid is the most improved vehicle in the comparison, and its story is genuinely encouraging. It starts ugly: a 1.15 frequency in 2021 drops it to #41 of 53, the only “Below average” hybrid mark here. From there it climbs every single year — 1.15, then 1.00, then 0.47, 0.45, and 0.43 — finishing at #21 of 66 in 2025, its best showing in the window. It still trails the RAV4 in every year. But the trajectory is the right one, and a buyer looking at a late CR-V Hybrid is looking at a meaningfully different vehicle from the 2021.
The gasoline comparison is where the tidy narrative breaks down, and it’s the more interesting half. Three distinct phases show up in five years.
2021 — the CR-V wins. The gasoline CR-V takes #20 of 53 against the RAV4’s #24, on a frequency of 0.45 to 0.71. The RAV4’s saving grace that year is severity: 0.83, the mildest reading of any vehicle in this entire comparison. Rare is not the word for its problems, but cheap is.
2022–2024 — the CR-V falls off a cliff. Its frequency goes 0.53, then 1.31, then 1.50, and its rank collapses from #21 of 59 to #49 of 67 to #59 of 72. The 2023 and 2024 marks begin a “Below average” run on the gasoline side that the CR-V has not yet broken out of. The RAV4 drifts in the same direction over the same stretch — 0.37, 0.44, 0.62 — but far more gently, holding #18, #25, and #35.
2025 — the RAV4 snaps back. This is the finding that most changes the picture. The gasoline RAV4’s frequency drops from 0.62 to 0.28, its severity to 0.89, and it lands at #7 of 66 — its best placement of the five years and a “Well above average” badge. The CR-V improves only marginally, from 1.50 to 1.42, and stays at #47 of 66, a third straight “Below average” gasoline year. Whatever was going wrong on the RAV4’s gasoline side through 2024, the 2025 model year appears to have addressed it. The CR-V’s gasoline side has not recovered.
Ranks and indices tell you that the 2023 gasoline CR-V had a bad year. They don’t tell you why. Two views in the dashboard do, and they’re worth walking through on this exact matchup.
The first plots every vehicle in the class on the two axes at once. Each dot is one model; the further down and to the left, the better. It shows instantly that the 2023 field is spread far wider on frequency than on severity — and where these two land inside it.
That vertical near-tie is the severity story again, drawn rather than asserted: both sit essentially on the 1.00 line, in the middle of a class that ranges from 0.73 to 1.41. The horizontal distance is the whole difference between #25 and #49.
The second view breaks a vehicle down by component and benchmarks each system against the class average, which is where the 2023 CR-V’s problem stops being abstract.
One bar explains nearly the entire year. The CR-V’s steering and suspension complaints run at 7.26 times the class average, drawn from roughly 300 records — by far the largest single deviation on either vehicle in any category. The RAV4’s steering and suspension sits at 0.49, less than half the class norm. Strip that one system out and the two vehicles look far more alike; leave it in and it drags the CR-V from mid-pack to #49 of 67 on its own.
The rest of the fingerprint is unremarkable, which is the point. The CR-V is better than the class average on engine, braking, electrical, powertrain, interior, and tires. This was not a broadly unreliable vehicle. It was a vehicle with one concentrated, expensive-to-ignore problem area — exactly the kind of finding a single reliability score is designed to average away, and exactly what you want to know before signing.

The long-term ranks hold one small surprise. The CR-V’s gasoline line (#23 of 88) actually carries a slightly better lifetime standing than its hybrid (#27) — but its worst years in this window are on the gas side, which means that lifetime number is propped up by older model years, not the ones you’d shop today. The RAV4 is the mirror image: the hybrid is its stronger line, long-term and recent alike, at #2 of 88.
Read the two together and the lifetime numbers are a lagging indicator on both nameplates. The CR-V Gasoline’s #23 flatters its recent form; the CR-V Hybrid’s #27 understates it. Where the two disagree, the recent model years are the ones telling you what you’d actually be buying.
If the question is “which of these two,” the data answers cleanly: the RAV4 — and most decisively in hybrid form, where it ranks near the top of the entire segment in every year measured. If the question is “can I live with a CR-V,” the answer is also yes, with the year attached. Its failures are no worse than the RAV4’s; they simply arrive more often, and how much more often depends heavily on which model year you’re looking at.
The practical shortlist runs like this. Any RAV4 Hybrid is a strong buy. A 2025 gasoline RAV4 is the biggest single-year improvement in the comparison. A 2025 CR-V Hybrid is a defensible pick and far removed from the 2021 version of itself. A 2021 gasoline CR-V is genuinely good and beats the RAV4 of that year. What you should avoid is the gasoline CR-V from 2023 onward, the weakest stretch in five years of data — and what you shouldn’t do is treat the two nameplates as identical. Pick the powertrain first, then the model year, then let the frequency index break the tie.
